Safaa Benson-Effiom is a playwright and theatre-maker from London. She was a finalist for the 2020 Theatre503 International Playwriting Award and the 2019 Tony Craze Award. Her debut play Til Death Do Us Part, a searing spotlight on relationships, grief and parenthood, premiered at Theatre503 in May 2022 to four and five-star reviews, subsequently winning ‘Best Production – Premiere’ at the London Pub Theatre Awards. It also led to Safaa being nominated for a Black British Theatre Award, Arts Foundation Prize and the Offie for ‘Most Promising New Playwright’. Safaa previously developed the verbatim piece All In Your Head in association with Lucy Dear and survivor groups at Southall Black Sisters, the piece brought real women's accounts of domestic abuse to the public consciousness and was created to raise awareness and encourage conversations on domestic abuse and coercive control. The one-woman show was streamed online during the pandemic. Safaa has previously been part of the Soho Theatre Writers’ Lab, Tamasha Playwrights’ and BBC Writersroom – London Voices. She is currently under commission with Soho Theatre/Cardboard Citizens as part of Soho Six.
